A stroll around the northern quarter
As it was St George's day we decided to head out into the centre of Manchester. It was teeming with people, protestors and preachers. So we headed towards the northern quarter to have a look around.
We bypassed Afflecks - although I do enjoy to mooch around its quirky little shops I wanted to instead head towards the Manchester Craft & Design centre.
I love creative spaces and I wish there were more places like this where artisans can display their wares or demonstrate their craft. The centre had some lovely jewellery makers, artists, paper crafters and is well worth a look.
The northern quarter was a very popular location for food and drink with every cafe, restaurant we passed brimming with people. They have some great quirky named locations like Luck, Lust, Liquor and Burn which served taco/burritos that looked very tempting. We stopped in Yard and Coop which was apparently the home of buttermilk fried chicken. The food looked amazing but we were put off by the hour wait (I told you it was popular) we will definitely have to go back.
We didn't get to see everything in the quarter but it's shops, cafes, bars and street art make it a great place to while away an hour or two. I particularly like that there were glimpses of historic Manchester still evident, untouched like the old fish market arches.
There were other buildings with beautiful leaded light windows that were just begging to be restored into some hipster boutique.
My quick visit to the northern quarter has certainly whet my appetite and I have no doubt I will be back again and again. Next time I will take my DSLR.
I would love to hear any recommendations on where to try the food or should I just work my way through all of them....
