Butterflies, Dragonflies and Stars in my eyes
What does your jewellery collection say about you as a person?
I spent the weekend hunting through my jewellery drawers looking at the kind of pieces i'm attracted too and its safe to say, there are a few recurring themes.
I don't have an extensive jewellery collection, as you can see below its only a couple of drawers, but when it comes to buying things I never really put much thought into why I buy the kind of items I do. I thought i'd post some pictures as I found it quite interesting.
Yes, there are few nice looking boxes in there so lets start with those.
This Links of London charm bracelet www.linksoflondon.comis my most sentimental piece of jewellery I own. My mum gave me charms for birthdays but I didn't want to have too many on the chain. Each charm represents something about me. The initial 'N' is obviously for my name. The handbag is quite structured and business like, in contrast to the flip flop which is my down to earth side. The cocktail glass, because who doesn't enjoy a Mai tai or two and finally the seahorse because I have a tattoo of one and have done for 16 years. I later learned that a seahorse was something my mum had always wanted to have as a child.
Ohhhhh you beautiful little blue box. It never fails to make me happy. This gorgeous star lariat necklace from Tiffany www.tiffany.co.uk was a gift to myself....just because, yup that is sad but hey if someone is not going to buy you jewellery then I see no harm in buying it for yourself. I didn't want the heart that everybody has I wanted something different and I get complimented on this every time I wear it. I also take great pleasure in seeing the surprise on people's faces when I tell them it's Tiffany. I browse their website and brochure frequently to ogle at the beautiful pieces. The Great Gatsby collection is just divine.
So, here's where the themes start to become clear. I definitely am attracted to jewellery with stars on. At school I used to doodle them on my exercise books and they even feature in my blog name (Seren is Welsh for Star). There are many associations with a star or pentagram, including connections with the elements, a sign that something is good quality (remember getting a gold star in school) or a sign of protection.
Butterflies are said to symbolise time, soul, grace, elegance, transition, expression and vulnerability. Whilst the dragonfly is maturity, depth of character, power of poise, the opening of ones eyes and to focus on 'living in the moment'. These are certainly qualities I aspire too and it's really interesting that in my subconscious I'm purchasing items that represent these things. Although I think the reality is more "ooh pretty...."
More butterflies... These bracelets have an industrial feel to me. The geometric red square and the bracelet at top left is actually a bronze colour. The brown beaded bracelet was a gift a friend bought me from the Cotswold's (which is a special place to me). It makes the most satisfying ch ch ch sound like a cicada!
Majority of my jewellery is silver because I prefer how it looks on me. So this little apple from Topshop www.topshop.com is a bit of a maverick. I remember just being attracted to it in the shop, the bright green reminded me of a granny smith. I was also struck with the colour of the Mikey necklace www.mikeylondon.co.uk. It looks like a natural stone but im not sure what it is made of. Blues and greens though are both colours you would associate with nature.
Cocktail rings are something I've only recently started to love. I never wore rings much at all when I was younger but now if I had to wear one statement item it would definitely be a cocktail ring. Flowers, blues and purples are the main attraction here. Again with the nature... Im also more of a stud kind of girl then a dangly earring. The large ones in the centre here I wore to a wedding with no other jewellery. You may also spot the obligatory J-Lo blingy hoops! I can't rock them like she does though.
More dragonflies and a peacock for a change. It was definitely the colours that attracted me to this. I had my eye on a beautiful blue one (again with the blue) but when I went to buy it this pink one caught my eye. The beads and the gold ball with tassles have a Gatsby-esque feel to me so I will be wearing those in the next few months. The locket is not the prettiest but I just love all things Audrey.
So all in all, the kind of jewellery i'm attracted too are ones that reflect nature be it in animal form or colour. Im a Taurean which is supposed to be an 'earth sign' so I guess I'm living up to my star sign (see I cant get away from stars either).
