Is time spent on something you enjoy, wasted time?
I really enjoy anything creative and love nothing more than researching and mastering a new craft or skill. Lately, it was making paper flowers and I also have my sights set on mixed media. However I have never been good at drawing and this was the reason why I never took art at school.
I recently discovered Jane Davenport's videos on You tube and she also has online classes to help you improve your drawing skills and more specifically faces. Her philosophy is that anyone can draw but when we are young if we do not demonstrate what is considered to be an acceptable level of skill - we are discouraged from doing it. This really resonates with me. My brother (who is very good at drawing) and I laugh at my drawing ability which to be honest hasn't really progressed past that of a teenager. And I am ok with that. So what if my drawing is slightly immature, its my style. I never took the time to practice it when I was young, although to be fair I didn't have the patience too. I do have the patience now and I find a lot of joy and peace in creating.
The point here is, don't be discouraged or put off of doing things just because it doesn't meet with someone else's expectations. Practice is supposed to make perfect ( if that is what your aiming for) and to me time spent doing something you love is never wasted.
